When the dancing went wrong, the evening went right: An argument for ageing and changing cultural practice

چکیده

Inspired by a line dancing club in Stoke-on-Trent, and drawing principally on cultural theorist Raymond Williams, this article makes the case for appreciating ways that practices age change over time. This group of dancers held deep, long, collective familiarity with their practice, through intimacy an idiosyncratic attitude to mistakes emerged. Taking these mistakes, collectively recast as ‘variations’, central empirical focus, I describe sense agency manifesting solidaristic style ageing together. Williams helps make articulation political: defending time space needed such attitudes around practice emerge, themselves.
